Description
The X-4 Bantam was an aircraft developed to study the flight characteristics of swept-wing semi-tailless aircraft at transonic speeds. The Northrop Corporation built only two of the type in 1948. Both of them were turned over to the Air Force and then to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, but only the No.2 X-4 joined the joint USAF/NACA program. This program explored the nature of the stability problems encountered near the speed of sound. The No. 1 aircraft, on the other hand, was grounded after only 10 flights to provide spare parts for the No. 2 aircraft. The X-4 aircraft proved that swept wing aircraft without horizontal tails were not suitable for transonic flight. Currently, the No. 1 X-4 is displayed at the Air Force Academy, while No. 2 is displayed at the Air Force Museum.
